Calgary Police Blitz Cuts Crime and Improves Safety in Downtown

UPDATE: A major police operation in downtown Calgary has led to a significant decrease in “problem behaviours” and improved safety in the area, according to officials. The coordinated effort, involving police, bylaw officers, transit safety personnel, and social workers, occurred on November 1, 2023, and engaged more than 100 personnel to connect with individuals in need of support while addressing criminal activity.

The Calgary Police Service reports that over 200 calls were attended during the one-day blitz. Authorities charged 25 individuals, resulting in 40 total charges. The operation also executed 220 warrants, made 217 proactive community engagements, and provided 115 referrals to social agencies. Notably, officers addressed 25 encampments, cleaning up 6 during their outreach.

Chief Katie McLellan emphasized the operation’s success, stating, “This demonstrates that individuals who loiter in public spaces can find alternative places to be, which we hope will be in the care of our social agencies.” McLellan highlighted a commitment to ongoing interventions, assuring the community that this initiative is just the beginning. “We will continue to do this going forward. This is not us just showing up and walking away,” she added.

Mayor Jeromy Farkas, who previously campaigned on ensuring safety in downtown Calgary, praised the operation. “Everyone who lives in and visits our downtown must feel safe, and safety requires a careful balance of enforcement and support,” he said in a release. “This includes addressing both acute safety needs and helping Calgarians connect to the services available to them right now.”

The operation’s immediate impact has led to a noticeable reduction in open-air drug use, weapons, and encampments, making the downtown area safer for residents and visitors alike. Authorities are hopeful that ongoing efforts will sustain this positive trend.
