Cambridge Community Rallies to Support Teacher in Final Days

URGENT UPDATE: The Cambridge community is mobilizing to support beloved teacher Mark Woodfield as he faces his final weeks with family, following a devastating diagnosis of neuroendocrine prostate cancer. Mark, a dedicated kindergarten teacher at Moffat Creek Public School, has been given just three to six weeks to live, prompting a heartfelt response from students, parents, and the wider community.
In an extraordinary show of solidarity, parents and friends have launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist the Woodfield family with caregiving costs and future expenses. As of Friday afternoon, over $28,000 has been raised towards a goal of $40,000, reflecting the deep impact Mark has had on his students and their families.
Mark’s children — Chloe, 21, Liam, 19, and Mick, 19 — have paused their studies at Brock University, Carleton University, and Conestoga College to be by their father’s side during this critical time. “It’s just very heartwarming to receive the support we’re receiving during this difficult time,” Mark shared, expressing gratitude for the community’s unwavering love.
Known for his passion for education and outdoor learning, Mark has transformed the lives of countless students. He championed the “Forest School” initiative, guiding young learners through nature, rain or shine. “He is a teacher who changes lives, not only for his students but for their families as well,” wrote Kolby Thomson-Latimer, a parent who initiated the GoFundMe.
Mark reflected on the profound moments he has shared with his students: “Certain messages, certain hugs, certain emails — they touch on the value you had in their life.” His commitment to teaching extends beyond the classroom; he has also dedicated his time to supporting young athletes with physical and cognitive disabilities through his work with Challenger Baseball and the Cambridge Ice Hounds.
As the community rallies behind the Woodfield family, the fundraiser highlights the broader impact Mark has had, stating, “Everyone has that one special teacher they never forget, and for so many families at Moffat Creek Public School, that teacher is Mark Woodfield.”
The outpouring of support continues as the community prepares to honor Mark’s legacy, ensuring his contributions to education and youth sports will be remembered for years to come. As donations flow in, the urgent need for assistance remains, with many asking how they can help during this challenging time.
For those wishing to donate or learn more about Mark’s journey, the GoFundMe page is actively collecting contributions to support the family as they navigate this heartbreaking chapter.
