URGENT UPDATE: Camosun College’s applied research centre, Camosun Innovates, officially opened its doors on September 25, 2023, in Saanich, promising to revolutionize the landscape for local businesses and organizations. This unique hub, one of only three in British Columbia, aims to transform innovative ideas into tangible products, making significant waves in the region’s economy.

This center provides crucial research and development support to up to 150 clients annually, including companies, non-profits, and government entities. “We help those who want to create and get products into the manufacturing pipeline but lack the necessary resources,” stated Richard Gale, director of Camosun Innovates. “Our facility offers technology and expertise that many companies simply cannot afford.”

Camosun Innovates has successfully tackled a diverse array of projects, from crafting unique motorcycle seat clamps to utilizing advanced 3D scanning technology to replicate a Bowhead whale skeleton. One notable project involved the BC Centre for Disease Control during the pandemic, where Gale and his team developed a system to safely transport Pfizer vaccines that needed to be kept at -30 °C.

In another inspiring collaboration, applied research technologist Jesse Dardengo worked with acclaimed Indigenous artist Carey Newman to create a custom system for carving totems from second-growth timber. “We designed a large rotisserie system that allows him to position and carve his pieces more ergonomically,” Dardengo explained. This innovative approach not only enhances the artistry but also showcases the intersection of technology and culture.

What sets Camosun Innovates apart is its flexibility. “We are material and process agnostic,” Gale emphasized. “Unlike typical machine shops, we explore various solutions, whether it’s metal, 3D printing, or composite materials.” This interdisciplinary approach opens up extensive possibilities for client projects and drives innovation across multiple sectors, including aquaculture, forestry, health, and education.

Despite serving clients across B.C. for 15 years with the support of provincial and federal governments, many in the community remain unaware of what Camosun Innovates can offer. The recent open house aimed to change that narrative. “We want people to know we are here and ready to help transform their production lines with cutting-edge automation and robotics,” Gale stated.

The opening of Camosun Innovates is more than just a new facility; it represents a significant opportunity for collaboration and innovation in British Columbia. As the community learns more about what this center has to offer, businesses and organizations are encouraged to explore the potential benefits of working with the dedicated team at Camosun Innovates.
