Campbell River Secures Final Funding for FireSmart Program

BREAKING: Campbell River has just secured its final grant of over $158,000 for the FireSmart program, aimed at enhancing community safety in response to wildfire risks. This funding, provided by the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM), is a critical boost to public safety and awareness initiatives in the region.
Officials announced this landmark funding earlier today, marking a pivotal moment for local efforts to bolster wildfire resilience. The City of Campbell River, in collaboration with the We Wai Kai Nation and Wei Wai Kum First Nation, initiated this funding application in 2023, and the final installment has now been confirmed.
Over the past two years, these funds have been utilized for various FireSmart activities, including community events and public safety programs designed to educate residents about wildfire prevention. As Jeff Ford, director of community safety, stated, “Through this program, we’re working to strengthen the community’s wildfire resilience and reduce wildlife risks by connecting residents with valuable information, providing training, and purchasing needed equipment.”
The FireSmart initiative encourages residents to take proactive measures, such as removing debris from gutters, trimming overhanging branches, and maintaining a buffer of at least 10 metres free of flammable materials around their homes. The program also advocates for the use of fire-resistant plants and landscaping.
Community engagement has been at the forefront of these efforts. Ford emphasized, “This has been a collaborative effort, and we appreciate the dedication and support of everyone who contributes to Campbell River FireSmart efforts in the community.” Free resources and information are readily available on the city’s official website, allowing residents to access essential tools for fire prevention.
As wildfires continue to pose a significant threat across British Columbia, this funding represents a crucial step toward ensuring the safety and resilience of the Campbell River community. With this final grant, the city is poised to implement even more comprehensive safety measures in the face of ongoing climate challenges.
Residents are urged to stay informed and participate in the FireSmart initiatives to protect their homes and environment. The community’s commitment to wildfire preparedness has never been more vital.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as Campbell River takes decisive action to safeguard its future.
