Canada’s Agriculture Enlightened Conference: Shaping Future Solutions
UPDATE: The Agriculture Enlightened Conference, hosted by the nonprofit EMILI in Manitoba, took place on October 23, 2023, drawing industry leaders and stakeholders from across North America and beyond, including participants from Ghana and Mongolia. This year’s event highlighted Canada’s crucial role in addressing global agricultural challenges amidst shifting geopolitical landscapes.
The conference emphasized Canada’s historical strength as an agricultural powerhouse, ranking ninth globally in agri-food exports. As global food demand is projected to surge alongside a population increase to 9.7 billion by mid-century, Canada stands at the forefront of innovation and sustainability in agriculture.
Participants discussed the urgent need for Canada to adapt to emerging technologies and evolving market demands. Keynote speaker Mirjana Prica from Food Innovation Australia underscored the importance of small and medium enterprises in driving innovation and responding to complex global changes. These businesses are expected to lead the way in producing value-added products that align with shifting consumer values and health concerns.
Regulatory challenges were also a major focus. Erika Carrasco of MLT Aikins urged a more dynamic approach from governments to regulate tools like in-field spray drones, emphasizing that current regulations must adapt rapidly to technological advancements. This flexibility is essential to harnessing the full potential of Canada’s agricultural sector.
The conference took place against a backdrop of heightened global tensions, particularly with trade relations being tested. Gary Mar, CEO of the Canada West Foundation, pointed out that while Canada must diversify its trade partnerships, especially in agriculture, it also needs to enhance its infrastructure to facilitate this shift. “If you can’t move things, you can’t sell them,” Mar stressed, calling for bold decisions from both public and private sectors.
As Canada navigates these challenges, the discussions at Agriculture Enlightened serve as a rallying call for innovation and collaboration. With the world looking to Canada for solutions, the agricultural sector is poised to play a pivotal role in creating a safer and more sustainable global environment.
As the event concluded, participants left with a renewed sense of purpose and urgency, recognizing that Canada’s agricultural future requires immediate action and innovative thinking. The insights shared will not only shape the industry but also impact global food security in the years to come.
Stay tuned for more updates on how Canada’s agricultural innovations are set to influence the future of food production worldwide.
