Canadiens Collapse in Final Minutes, Fall to Oilers 6-5
UPDATE: In a stunning turn of events, the Montreal Canadiens disintegrated in the third period, losing 6-5 to the Edmonton Oilers on October 24, 2025. After leading for most of the game, the Canadiens fell apart, allowing the Oilers to secure a dramatic victory at Rogers Place.
The Canadiens started strong, with Alex Newhook scoring the first goal of the night, but the momentum quickly shifted. Despite an impressive second period where the Canadiens scored three goals in just under two minutes, the Oilers rallied back in the final minutes, showcasing their resilience.
After a shaky start, the Canadiens had a promising second period. Josh Anderson, Cole Caufield, and Alex Newhook all found the back of the net, bringing the score to 4-3 in favor of Montreal. The Canadiens fans were ecstatic, but their joy was short-lived as the Oilers began their comeback.
The third period began with Newhook extending Montreal’s lead to 5-3. However, it was a rollercoaster of emotions as Leon Draisaitl scored on the power play, cutting the deficit to one just minutes later. The Canadiens’ lead was further threatened when Ryan Nugent-Hopkins tied the game at 5-5 in a matter of seconds, signaling a complete turnaround.
“It was a tough loss. We had the game in our hands, but we let it slip away,” said Canadiens goaltender Samuel Montembeault.
With less than a minute remaining, Vasily Podkolzin scored the game-winner, sealing the Canadiens’ fate and ending their two-game winning streak. The team now faces a daunting challenge as they continue their road trip against the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday.
Fans and analysts are already questioning what went wrong for the Canadiens. The once-promising lead vanished, leaving many to wonder about the team’s defensive strategy. “The referees didn’t help us tonight,” commented one fan, highlighting the controversial calls that some believe contributed to the loss.
Looking ahead, the Canadiens must regroup quickly. With their next game against the Canucks just around the corner, they need to address their third-period collapse if they hope to stay competitive in the league.
This defeat not only impacts the Canadiens’ morale but also raises concerns about their ability to maintain leads in crucial moments. As the team prepares for their next matchup, fans are left hoping for a swift turnaround.
