Carney Government Hits Decade-High Approval Ahead of Commons Return
UPDATE: Prime Minister Mark Carney and his government are set to return to the House of Commons next week with a remarkable approval rating of 58 percent, the highest seen in nearly a decade. This surge in support comes from a new Ipsos poll conducted between September 5-8, revealing a significant 10-point increase in approval since June.
As lawmakers prepare for the fall sitting, the Carney government faces criticism from Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre, who has labeled the summer as a “Seinfeld summer,” implying the government accomplished little during this period. However, this poll shows that many Canadians, especially those aged 18-34, are backing Carney, with 63 percent approval in this demographic.
While the government enjoys high approval, it also faces pressing challenges, particularly concerning affordability and the economy. Ipsos found that 36 percent of respondents gave the government an “F” for its efforts to lower the cost of living, and 31 percent rated efforts on housing affordability as failing.
Ipsos’ Global CEO of Public Affairs, Darrell Bricker, highlights the urgency of addressing these issues, stating, “You can’t communicate your way out of this… You’ve got to find a way to actually have a direct effect.” As the Carney government prepares to address these criticisms, it remains to be seen how it will tackle the growing concerns of Canadians regarding their economic security.
Despite these vulnerabilities, the poll indicates stable voter preferences. The Liberals maintain 43 percent support among decided voters, only slightly down from 44 percent in the spring election. The Conservatives sit at 39 percent, a drop from their election figure, while the leaderless NDP garners 7 percent support. In Quebec, the Liberals stand at 41 percent, leading the Bloc Québécois at 32 percent.
As parliament reconvenes, all eyes will be on the Carney government to see how they will address these critical economic issues and maintain their approval ratings amidst growing scrutiny. The political landscape is set to shift as the fall session unfolds, making this a crucial time for both the government and its opponents.
