Carol Stream’s National Night Out: Community Connects with Police

URGENT UPDATE: Carol Stream’s National Night Out, a vibrant celebration fostering community and police connections, is set to take place on August 1, 2023, from 5 to 9 PM at the Town Center, located at Gary Avenue and Lies Road. This highly anticipated event aims to “humanize the badge” and strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the community.
Carol Cadle, the Illinois state’s “Most Outstanding Officer of the Year,” leads the charge for this year’s festivities. “The goal and the mission of National Night Out is to give a gift to our communities,” Cadle emphasized, highlighting her commitment to outreach and engagement. Last year, the event drew approximately 2,000 attendees, and despite rain challenges, the hope for clear skies is high this time around.
As communities around the nation partake in National Night Out, Carol Stream joins a host of suburban towns like Wheaton and Geneva in hosting family-friendly activities designed to promote safety and connection. Wheaton features an exciting SWAT obstacle course, a dunk tank, and even a helicopter landing at Northside Park. Meanwhile, Geneva plans live drone demonstrations, a Touch-a-Truck display, and visits from the department’s beloved comfort dog, Tommy.
In a collaborative effort, Carol Stream’s police department has organized the event, with participation from 15 to 20 officers and command staff. Deputy Chief Brian Cluever stated, “It’s a night of safety, for people to come out and enjoy something in a carefree environment.” The gathering will feature a live band, children’s games, costumed characters, and an array of free food and treats.
Cadle is excited to offer kids three bouncy houses and has teamed up with the 501st Midwest Garrison for added fun. “Kids have a good time, parents have a good time, and no one walks away broke at the end of the night,” she noted, emphasizing the event’s inclusive nature.
This initiative is not just about fun; it serves a vital purpose in bridging the gap between law enforcement and the community. “It’s good for the soul to be able to connect with people on a different level,” Cluever said. “When they start to see you beyond the uniform, you’re not just a police officer, you’re also a person with feelings and family.”
As National Night Out unfolds this evening, residents are encouraged to come out, engage with their local police, and enjoy a night filled with connection and camaraderie. With exciting activities planned and a strong community spirit, this event promises to be both entertaining and impactful.
Stay tuned for updates as the festivities kick off, and share your experiences on social media to highlight the importance of community engagement with law enforcement.
