Cary-Grove, Jacobs, Johnsburg Boys Soccer Teams Win Playoff Openers
UPDATE: In a thrilling start to the playoffs, Cary-Grove, Jacobs, and Johnsburg boys soccer teams clinched victories in their opening matches, setting the stage for exciting semifinal clashes.
At Woodstock on Friday, Cary-Grove edged out Woodstock North with a nail-biting 1-0 victory, thanks to a late goal by Bryce Nordengren in the 80th minute. Goalkeeper Angel Apaez secured the win with an impressive six saves, achieving a shutout for the Trojans, who now boast a record of 3-18-1. Cary-Grove will face Geneva in the semifinals on Tuesday at 4 p.m. North concludes its season at 13-13.
Meanwhile, Jacobs dominated Rockford Auburn with a staggering 8-0 victory at Algonquin. The Golden Eagles, improving to 5-12-3, showcased their offensive prowess in this Class 3A Huntley Regional quarterfinal. Jacobs is set to meet host Huntley in the semifinals, scheduled for Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
In an intense showdown at Johnsburg, the Skyhawks triumphed over North Shore Country Day 3-2 in double overtime. The Skyhawks, with a record of 3-13, will advance to face Lycee Francais on Monday at 4 p.m., aiming to capitalize on their thrilling overtime victory.
The excitement isn’t limited to soccer; in girls volleyball, teams also showcased stellar performances. At the Glenbard East Autumnfest in Lombard, both Huntley and Prairie Ridge advanced to the Gold Bracket. Huntley (record: 24-6) overcame Schaumburg with scores of 25-24, 25-12 and Barrington 12-25, 25-15, 26-24. Star player Izzy Whitehouse led with 17 kills, while teammates contributed significantly with multiple kills and assists.
Prairie Ridge (record: 25-4) also triumphed, defeating Glenbard East 25-27, 25-17, 25-13 and Belleville East 25-19, 25-20. Standout Tegan Vrbancic recorded 28 digs, while Addi Smith excelled with 58 assists.
