Central Okanagan Campfire Ban Extended Amid Rising Fire Risks
URGENT UPDATE: The campfire ban in the Central Okanagan has been extended indefinitely, contrary to earlier reports that it would be lifted on September 29. This critical decision comes in response to escalating fire activity, including the recent Munro Lake blaze near Peachland, coupled with persistent high temperatures and dry conditions that have heightened fire danger ratings across the region.
The Kamloops Fire Centre has announced plans to lift its own campfire ban on September 9, but local authorities in the Central Okanagan are maintaining restrictions until further notice. This ban affects all local government fire jurisdictions, including the City of West Kelowna, District of Lake Country, District of Peachland, and Westbank First Nation, as well as regional district fire service areas such as Ellison, Joe Rich, North Westside, and Wilson’s Landing.
Notably, campfires are strictly prohibited within the City of Kelowna, amplifying the urgency for residents to adhere to these rules. Moreover, the Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) has confirmed that opening burning will now be delayed until October 15, a decision made in collaboration with the BC Wildfire Service. Category 2 and Category 3 open burning remain banned, with local fire departments refusing to issue outdoor burning permits at this time.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant. If anyone spots illegal burning, they should immediately contact the Regional Fire Dispatch Centre at 250-469-8577. For details about open burning and to check qualifications for a permit, visit rdco.com/airquality.
As the fire season intensifies, local authorities will reevaluate the situation in early October. The extension of the campfire ban reflects a proactive approach to safeguard communities and natural resources from fire hazards that could escalate rapidly under current conditions.
This situation remains fluid, and residents are encouraged to stay updated on further developments. Share this information to help spread awareness and ensure community safety.
