Charlottetown Launches Renovation of Historic Gas Station NOW

UPDATE: Construction has officially begun on a transformative renovation of a historic gas station in Charlottetown, with plans to convert it into an innovative energy hub by summer 2024. The long-closed Irving Oil station, located at 85 Euston St., was generously donated to the city earlier this year and is set to play a pivotal role in the community’s energy future.

The multimillion-dollar project aims to refurbish the 1930s-era structure, known for its distinctive turreted design, into an electric vehicle charging station complete with facilities for e-bikes. The city is contributing $750,000 to the renovation, while both the federal and provincial governments are each providing $500,000 in funding.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony held on October 27, 2023, Charlottetown Mayor Philip Brown emphasized the importance of preserving the city’s heritage. “When you talk about heritage, there’s a cost to it,” he stated, highlighting the project’s potential to restore historic properties for modern community needs.

The site, which has been dormant since a car rental company closed after the gas pumps were removed in 2008, is a long-awaited development for local residents. P.E.I. Premier Rob Lantz, who also attended the event, expressed his enthusiasm, noting that the project had been on his radar for nearly two decades. “A lot of heritage advocates are happy to see this happening… It’s going to be a great amenity to the whole community,” he remarked.

The renovation will include an additional 650 square feet to the existing structure, enhancing its functionality and appeal. The city plans to integrate a community center and a small park into the design, creating a welcoming space for residents and visitors alike.

With construction now underway, the energy hub is poised to not only revitalize the area but also provide essential services as the demand for electric vehicle infrastructure grows. The anticipated opening by summer 2024 marks a significant step forward for Charlottetown in addressing modern energy needs while honoring its historical roots.
