UPDATE: Charlottetown officially opens its new historical pop-up exhibit, “Charlottetown: A History,” at the Confederation Court Mall today. This urgent initiative showcases the city’s rich heritage and is set to run until October 6.

The exhibit comes as Charlottetown celebrates 30 years of amalgamation, but its roots stretch back to 1765 when it was established as the capital of St. John’s Island, now known as Prince Edward Island. The city was named in honor of Queen Charlotte, the consort of King George III.

“Almost 100 years after its founding, Charlottetown was incorporated in April 1855, marking its first municipal election in August of that same year,” stated a press release from the city. This milestone signifies that Charlottetown is now 170 years old.

As the city developed, it saw the establishment of essential services, including the police and fire departments. In 1995, separate villages united to form the Charlottetown we recognize today, enhancing its growth and community spirit.

The exhibit features a collection of images and artifacts that highlight the city’s evolution over the centuries. It has received support from the Prince Edward Island Regiment Museum and the Confederation Court Mall, which generously provided space for this significant display.

“We want to thank all those who contributed images and artifacts that made this exhibit possible,” the release emphasized. This pop-up exhibit not only honors the past but also fosters a sense of community pride among residents and visitors alike.

As interest in the exhibit grows, city officials encourage everyone to visit and explore the historical narrative that has shaped Charlottetown into a vibrant urban center. Don’t miss this chance to engage with the city’s history before it closes on October 6.
