Charlottetown Youth Committee Urgently Seeks Young Voices Now
UPDATE: Charlottetown’s Youth Engagement Committee is urgently calling for more young voices to join their ranks, particularly those in their early twenties. This initiative aims to empower youth in the city and influence critical issues affecting their lives. The committee currently has only five members, and chair Max MacDonald emphasizes the need for younger participants to step forward.
As of today, the committee is actively seeking individuals aged 15 to 30 to engage in municipal conversations where young people are often underrepresented. “I think that young people are just too busy to advocate to the government on their own behalf,” MacDonald stated in an interview with CBC’s Island Morning. “Municipal government often receives the least attention from youth, yet it significantly impacts their lives.”
The committee is set to announce upcoming events through the City of Charlottetown’s social media channels, providing details on how to join. MacDonald highlighted a recent success where the committee influenced the city to keep bike racks on city buses during the winter after hearing community concerns. This trial initiative showed positive results and may continue if there’s enough interest.
In addition to infrastructure changes, the committee is addressing accessibility issues. Last winter, they recommended offering free gym hours at the West Royalty Community Centre, which received overwhelming positive feedback. “We’re planning to do it again this year because it was so successful,” MacDonald confirmed.
Looking ahead, the committee aims to hold more events to directly connect with young residents, making their voices heard. This outreach is crucial as the committee strives to represent the interests of Charlottetown’s youth effectively.
Stay tuned for further updates and opportunities to engage with local governance. The youth of Charlottetown are encouraged to step up and make their impact felt now!
