BREAKING NEWS: A remarkable resurgence of coho salmon is being celebrated in Saanich’s Gabo Creek, with nearly 270 young coho salmon counted this year—up from zero last year. This stunning turnaround follows significant restoration efforts completed in August 2023, spearheaded by Saanich in collaboration with Peninsula Streams & Shorelines.

This urgent update highlights the impact of the restoration project, which included the rehabilitation of 170 metres of creek habitat. Key actions involved clearing sediment, adding spawning gravel, anchoring logs and stumps for habitat support, and removing debris to restore natural water flow. The enhancements have created a vital nursery for coho salmon fry and coastal cutthroat trout, ensuring a thriving ecosystem.

Alix Link, Saanich’s manager of natural areas, expressed her enthusiasm:

“It’s been so incredible to witness such an increase in coho salmon using Gabo Creek, and to see the dedication and collaboration that staff and the community have put into bringing this important salmon habitat back.”

In addition to the coho salmon, monitoring efforts revealed 35 cutthroat trout residing in the creek, underscoring the restoration’s success. Katrina Adams, senior aquatic biologist with Peninsula Streams & Shorelines, emphasized the significance of these results:

“This is proof that long-term, collaborative restoration works.”

The community’s involvement has been pivotal. Residents are encouraged to participate in upcoming planting events aimed at restoring native plants and trees along the creek’s banks. Details for these events will be available on Saanich’s events calendar, providing an opportunity for local residents to contribute to the ongoing health of their environment.

This exciting development in Gabo Creek not only showcases the positive effects of environmental restoration but also highlights the community’s commitment to preserving local ecosystems. With continuous monitoring planned for salmon numbers and habitat health, Saanich aims to nurture this recovery and ensure a sustainable future for local fish populations.
