Cole Perfetti Scores First Goal of Season as Jets Beat Flames 4-3
UPDATE: In a thrilling comeback, Cole Perfetti scored his first goal of the season just 1:20 into the third period, leading the Winnipeg Jets to a 4-3 shootout victory against the Calgary Flames on November 25, 2023. This marks a significant moment for Perfetti, who had been sidelined for a month due to a lower-body injury.
The Jets were counting on Perfetti to step up this season, especially after the departure of Nik Ehlers to the Carolina Hurricanes. With the game tied late, Perfetti’s power-play goal initially looked like the game-winner until Matt Coronato equalized for Calgary with the goalie pulled at 18:46 of the third period. However, Winnipeg triumphed in the shootout, with Gabriel Vilardi sealing the win.
Perfetti’s return was crucial. After missing 14 games, he expressed relief, saying, “Felt good… had some chances so far this year, and missing some grade As, and had a couple chances in this game.” His coach, Scott Arniel, praised his offensive instincts, emphasizing, “He’s got a good hockey IQ when it comes to playing in the offensive side of things.”
The Jets showcased a powerful performance on the power play, successfully converting 1-for-1 in this matchup, bringing their recent streak to 4-for-8 over the last three games. Perfetti’s return has coincided with this surge, as he now occupies the pivotal bumper position previously held by Ehlers.
Defensively, Connor Hellebuyck made 31 saves, improving his record to 8-6-0. The Jets’ victory is a much-needed boost, especially after struggling on the road, finishing their six-game trip with a 2-4-0 record.
Perfetti’s goal not only ignited the team’s offense but also lifted spirits among teammates. Josh Morrissey, who assisted on the goal, highlighted the impact of Perfetti’s scoring ability, remarking, “It’s nice to get that first one and start to roll from there.”
The Jets now look to build on this momentum as they return home for their next games. Perfetti’s performance will be closely watched as the team aims for greater success this season. Fans are hopeful that his presence will continue to enhance the team’s offensive strategy as they push for playoff contention.
