Colin Farrell Thrills in Macau Casino Drama: ‘It Was Bananas!’
UPDATE: Colin Farrell is making headlines with his latest film, “Ballad of a Small Player,” shot on location in the vibrant casinos of Macau. The film, co-starring Tilda Swinton, premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on Tuesday, showcasing a unique glimpse into the high-stakes world of gambling.
Filmed over 33 days within the bustling atmosphere of Macau’s casinos, the movie captures the surreal essence of this gambling capital. Farrell, portraying a velvet-suited conman and gambling addict, describes the experience as “bananas,” sharing the intensity of living in hotels “in the middle of the gambling strip.”
“This was all-hands-on-deck,” he told AFP, highlighting the immersive nature of the shoot. The film’s setting is particularly relevant, as Macau boasts the world’s highest casino revenue, approximately four times that of Las Vegas. The territory’s skyline, adorned with extravagant casinos mimicking global landmarks, creates a visually stunning backdrop for the story.
Director Edward Berger emphasized that this portrayal of Macau is unprecedented in a Western film. “It’s never been really shown like that on screen,” he stated, calling it an adventure. The film’s narrative unfolds during the Hungry Ghost Festival, a traditional Chinese celebration that adds a supernatural element to the plot.
Berger, who previously directed the acclaimed “All Quiet on the Western Front,” was drawn to the project after discovering Lawrence Osborne’s novel in 2018. His desire for creative variety led him to this dramatically different film. “I focus on the next,” he explained, seeking to explore new genres and tones.
As part of their preparation, the cast delved into the world of baccarat, a game central to the film’s plot. “Absolutely, we had to learn!” Berger confirmed, while Farrell joked about his lack of interest in gambling. “One affliction I never got, gambling. Not for me,” he laughed.
“Ballad of a Small Player” not only presents a gripping storyline but also aims to capture the essence of Macau’s exuberance. With its release, audiences will experience a rare cinematic journey through a city often overlooked in mainstream films. This release is one to watch as it unfolds, potentially setting new trends in the portrayal of global gambling hubs.
As the excitement builds, fans and critics alike are eager to see how this film will resonate with audiences and whether it will garner the acclaim of its predecessors. Stay tuned for more updates on this captivating project!
