UPDATE: The rejuvenation of Cominco Gardens in Kimberley is nearly complete and set to open to the public before winter, according to a report from the Kimberley City Council. During a regular meeting on November 10, city officials confirmed that the gardens will feature impressive accessibility improvements, enhancing the experience for all visitors.

Chief Administrative Officer Jim Hendricks highlighted the progress made during the meeting, stating, “It’s looking great. The accessibility improvements up there are fantastic.” The final touches, including site furnishing and signage, are expected to be finished by spring 2026.

The council also announced that the Centre 64 bandshell and landscaping are mostly done, with some work extending into spring. In a significant accomplishment, the St. Mary’s Avenue reconstruction project was completed ahead of schedule, bringing new sidewalks, a retaining wall, expanded parking, and upgraded underground infrastructure to the community.

The report detailed ongoing construction at the Wastewater Treatment Plant, with earthworks completed in October. Actual construction will begin in spring 2026, with the project expected to take a couple of years to finish.

In addition to these developments, the city unveiled its new website, attracting an impressive 24,000 active users. Residents are encouraged to explore the revamped platform for updates on city operations and projects.

Building permit activity data revealed a total of 11 new dwelling units approved in the third quarter of 2024, matching last year’s figures but significantly down from 62 permits issued in 2023. So far this year, a total of 74 new dwelling units have been approved, with total construction values reaching $35.8 million.

The Kimberley Fire Department also reported a surge in activity, responding to 59 incidents in Q3, including 19 automatic alarms and 10 motor vehicle accidents. Year-to-date, the department has responded to 136 incidents and continues to collaborate with the BC Wildfire Service on wildfire risk reduction initiatives, completing a 12-hectare prescribed burn recently.

The next Kimberley City Council meeting is scheduled for November 24, where further updates on these projects and community initiatives will be discussed. Stay tuned for more urgent developments as they unfold.
