Community Unites for “Song and Drum” Event in Brandon Park
UPDATE: Residents of Brandon, Manitoba, gathered in Stanley Park on September 30, 2023, for an exhilarating “Song and Drum” event aimed at fostering community spirit. Hundreds participated in a day filled with music, food, and cultural celebration, marking a significant moment in local community building.
Organized by the Brandon Friendship Centre and various partners, this vibrant event was the culmination of weekly gatherings among local men’s and women’s groups. Murray Smith, one of the event organizers, emphasized the importance of community connection, stating, “Through our song and our drumming, we enhance our community to be healthier, to be happier and most importantly, to be harmonious.”
The gathering served as a platform for sharing traditions and promoting healing, especially among those in recovery. Lori Carver, who works closely with individuals in recovery, expressed her passion for sharing knowledge about drumming and singing. “I just try to pass my knowledge down to the clients there,” she shared, highlighting the event’s emotional and cultural significance.
Children and youth played a vital role in the celebrations, drumming alongside elders and community members. Smith explained the intentional inclusion of younger generations, saying, “Without a basis for what we do, they don’t have a basis to connect to their culture.” This intergenerational engagement is crucial for preserving cultural heritage and fostering a sense of belonging.
The event was made possible by dedicated volunteers who assisted with logistics, including providing shade tents amid the warm weather. Smith expressed profound gratitude for their efforts, stating, “People from all walks of life come here, and we allow everybody to participate.” He also underscored the sober nature of the event, aimed at creating a safe space for those in recovery.
As the day progressed, participants enjoyed a festive atmosphere filled with music and camaraderie, reinforcing the event’s mission to build a stronger, more connected community. Smith articulated a heartfelt thanks to “everybody that has a Creator and prays, for allowing us to walk a good life and facilitate all of what we do through our actions.”
The success of the “Song and Drum” event highlights the power of community gatherings in times of uncertainty. With such strong participation and positive feedback, organizers are already looking ahead to future events aimed at continuing this essential work.
