Connor’s Hat Trick Not Enough as Jets Fall to Stars 5-4
UPDATE: Kyle Connor’s stunning hat trick could not prevent the Winnipeg Jets from suffering a narrow 5-4 loss to the Dallas Stars in their season opener on October 9, 2025. The game, held at the packed Canada Life Centre, showcased Connor’s exceptional talent but ultimately highlighted the Jets’ struggles.
The spotlight was meant for new addition Jonathan Toews, but it was Connor who stole the show. Just one day after signing an eight-year, $96 million contract extension, Connor electrified fans with three goals, spurring a comeback attempt that fell short. “The bottom line is, we want to get some wins in this league,” Connor stated post-game, emphasizing the need for team success.
The Jets entered the third period trailing 4-1 but surged back with two short-handed goals, igniting hope among fans. Connor’s second goal at 11:09 and his third with just 3:03 left on the clock brought the Jets within reach, yet it was not enough to clinch the victory.
Toews, making his long-awaited return to the NHL after missing two seasons due to health issues, received a warm welcome from the crowd. Logging 18:19 of ice time, he managed one shot on goal in his first game since April 2023. “Just a lot of energy. A lot of excitement,” Toews said, reflecting on the crowd’s support. Despite the loss, he expressed optimism, recognizing areas for improvement.
Head coach Scott Arniel acknowledged the team’s overall performance, stating, “At the end of the day, that’s a tough one because our whole group wasn’t good.” The Jets struggled through penalties, allowing the Stars to capitalize, including a goal from Mikko Rantanen, who contributed a goal and two assists in the win.
Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan praised Toews for his return, noting the positive impact of a player of his caliber in the league. “It’s great to see him back,” said Rantanen, underscoring the significance of Toews’ presence.
As the Jets regroup after this tough opener, all eyes will be on their next match to see if they can translate individual brilliance into team success.
Stay tuned for updates as the Jets look to bounce back in their upcoming games.
