UPDATE: Construction has officially begun on a highly anticipated elementary school in Regina’s Harbour Landing neighborhood, with a projected opening set for fall 2027. Shovels hit the ground as community leaders and officials celebrated this long-requested development, addressing critical overcrowding issues faced by local students.

The new facility, a collaborative effort between Regina Public Schools and Regina Catholic Schools, aims to accommodate 500 public school students and 350 Catholic school students, along with adding 90 new child-care spaces. This much-needed school comes as the southwest Regina community grapples with severe overcrowding, having transformed shared spaces into classrooms due to soaring enrollment since the opening of its first elementary school in 2017.

During a media event marking the groundbreaking, Premier Scott Moe emphasized the government’s commitment to education, stating, “Since we’ve had the honour of forming government, we have built, announced, or planned 115 schools.” This new facility marks the 31st school in Regina, reflecting the rapid growth of the area.

The journey to this moment has not been without its challenges. Originally approved in 2020, the school faced delays due to collaboration with the City of Regina and local school divisions. Education Minister Everett Hindley acknowledged the prolonged timeline, noting, “It’s not a normal timeline. This one has taken a little bit longer.”

The total capital cost for the project is $65.9 million, with the City of Regina providing $4 million toward land and site servicing. Regina Mayor Chad Bachynski hailed the construction start as a long-awaited milestone, stating, “This community has really shown how much they value strong schools. Together we’re not just building a school — this is a future filled with faith, hope, and possibility.”

As construction progresses, the community eagerly anticipates the positive impact this school will have on local families. The facility aims to alleviate the strain on existing schools and provide a nurturing environment for the growing population.

Stay tuned for updates as this important project unfolds and shapes the future of education in Harbour Landing.
