Crash Champions Seeks Urgent Approval to Relocate in Lockport
URGENT UPDATE: Crash Champions, a prominent auto body shop, is pushing for immediate approval to relocate from its current facility on State Street to a larger space on 9th Street in Lockport. During a City Council Committee of the Whole meeting on August 16, 2023, Lockport officials discussed the proposal for a new 20,000-square-foot facility, which aims to boost operations and accommodate the shop’s growth.
The proposed site is strategically located just north of the intersection of 9th Street and Thornton Avenue, within the Lockport Center development. The new property spans 2.78 acres—a significant upgrade from the current 0.5-acre location at 840 N. State St. The owners of Crash Champions report they have outgrown their existing facility, which has been in use since the 1960s.
This expansion plan is set to create between 20 and 25 jobs and is projected to increase annual revenue to between $6 million and $10 million. The move would not only enhance the company’s capacity but also generate additional sales tax revenue from auto parts for the city.
While the zoning for the land is already suitable for the proposed operations, the annexation agreement for the property requires revision, and a special-use permit must be approved. The Lockport Planning and Zoning Committee unanimously recommended advancing the plan on June 10, 2023, despite some concerns from local residents about potential noise, odors, and visibility of damaged vehicles outside the shop.
In response to these concerns, Crash Champions assures that the vehicle storage area will be fenced to minimize visibility, although customers may still leave vehicles in the main parking lot after hours. This proactive approach aims to address community feedback while ensuring the facility remains operational and efficient.
The Committee of the Whole has now moved the proposal to the regular City Council meeting scheduled for August 20, 2023, where further discussions and a final vote are anticipated. The outcome of this meeting could significantly reshape the landscape of the Lockport auto repair industry and enhance local employment opportunities.
Residents, stakeholders, and auto enthusiasts alike are encouraged to stay tuned as this urgent proposal unfolds. The potential benefits to the community and local economy make this an important development for Lockport.
