UPDATE: The Crystal Lake community is reeling from the death of Dino Sfondouris, a beloved manager at Around the Clock Diner, who passed away on October 7, 2023, at the age of 56 after a courageous battle with prostate cancer. His death comes just months after the diner celebrated its 50th anniversary, marking a significant loss for both the restaurant and its patrons.

Sfondouris dedicated over 35 years to the diner, starting as a cook in his teenage years alongside his sister, Selvia Sfondouris. Their mother had previously worked at the diner, creating a legacy of service and community. In a heartfelt Facebook post, staff at Around the Clock expressed their sorrow, stating, “He touched so many lives and he will be so deeply missed.”

The diner co-owner, Steve Theofanous, shared that Sfondouris rarely missed a day of work, demonstrating an unwavering dedication and work ethic. “We’re so overwhelmed, but not surprised at the response that the people have shown to us and to his family,” Theofanous said, reflecting on the outpouring of love from the community. His brother, Fano Theofanous, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the deep connections Sfondouris fostered with customers.

During his late-night shifts, Sfondouris was known for his compassion, often sitting with patrons and providing them with support and advice. “I think Dino would like to be known for being a strong advocate for his faith, but also for his love for hospitality,” Steve Theofanous remarked, highlighting Sfondouris’s passion for cooking and making others feel at home.

Selvia Sfondouris described her brother as a spiritual guide, saying, “He was out to save souls. He was the family spiritual father.” His faith and kindness left an indelible mark on the community, and his absence was felt immediately by regular customers. For many, Sfondouris was not just a manager but a friend and confidant.

His legacy will live on in the diner, particularly through his signature dish, “Dino’s Benedict,” which features a sausage patty instead of the traditional Canadian bacon. The diner plans to honor Sfondouris’s memory with a public service, which Selvia hopes will align with his birthday in November.

“The good memories that he had with people, and the connections that he had with people, I think that’s going to last for a long time to come,” Fano Theofanous stated. The heartfelt tributes to Sfondouris reflect the profound impact he had on the community, leaving a void that will be challenging to fill.
