Daisy Nordling, 102, Remembered for a Life of Community Service
URGENT UPDATE: Daisy Nordling, a beloved matriarch and community figure, has passed away at the age of 102 years. Her remarkable life, which spanned over a century, came to an end, leaving a profound impact on Dawson City and beyond.
Daisy arrived in Dawson City in the winter of 1949, taking a position with the Federal Government. She quickly became an integral part of the community, marrying local resident Axel Nordling and raising three children: Ralph, Alan, and Pat. Known for her dedication, Daisy taught typing and bookkeeping at the local school, served as the head of the public library, and even held a seat on the City Council.
Daisy also delighted audiences in the early 1960s by performing as “the Lady that’s known as Lou” at the Palace Grand Theatre. After Axel’s passing, she moved to Vancouver but frequently returned to the Yukon to visit friends and family.
Throughout her life, Daisy traveled extensively, riding a camel in Egypt and an elephant in Thailand, while also sharing her experiences through her role as a newsletter writer for the Vancouver Yukoners Association. Her adventurous spirit and love for life will be fondly remembered by her family, including 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, who affectionately referred to her as “GG.”
As her family mourns her passing, they also celebrate her legacy. Daisy has expressed her wish to return to Dawson City for burial alongside Axel in the YOOP cemetery, a location that holds deep significance for the family.
Daisy’s ability to connect with others and stay informed about the happenings in their lives made her the go-to person for news and support. Her family reflects on a life rich with memories and shared stories, underscoring the emotional void her absence leaves.
As they prepare to honor her wishes, Daisy’s spirit is expected to soar, and her legacy will undoubtedly live on through the lives she touched. The community is invited to celebrate her life and contributions, ensuring that her memory endures.
