Dallas Wings Win WNBA Draft Lottery Again; Tempo to Pick 6th or 7th
BREAKING: The Dallas Wings have clinched victory in the WNBA draft lottery for the second consecutive season, securing a top pick once again. The announcement came just last night, confirming the Wings’ 42 percent chance to land the coveted selection. Last year, they selected Paige Bueckers with the first overall pick, and anticipation is high for their next choice.
In a surprising twist, the Minnesota Lynx, who boasted the best record last season, will now select second in the upcoming draft. The Lynx acquired this pick through a trade with the Chicago Sky. Meanwhile, the Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire, newly added franchises in a league expanding to 15 teams, will choose sixth and seventh after a coin flip to decide their order.
The WNBA draft is set for April 2024, but the league is currently in negotiations with the players’ union for a new collective bargaining agreement. An extension for the deadline has been agreed upon, moving from October 31, 2023 to November 30, 2023. If negotiations proceed smoothly, fans can expect exciting developments leading up to the draft.
As for the talent pool, while there is no standout No. 1 pick like Bueckers this year, a wealth of promising players are vying for attention. Among them are Lauren Betts from UCLA, Azzi Fudd from UConn, Flau’jae Johnson from LSU, and Olivia Miles from TCU. Additionally, Spanish player Awa Fam is also generating buzz as a potential top selection.
The stakes are high as teams prepare for the draft, with the Wings looking to build on their success and the Tempo aiming to make an immediate impact with their new coach, Sandy Brondello. Fans are eagerly awaiting the outcomes of the coin flip and the upcoming draft, as the competition heats up in the WNBA.
Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops. The excitement surrounding the WNBA draft is palpable, and fans across the league are eager to see how their teams will shape the future.
