Death Toll Surges to 145 in Thailand Floods, 3.6M Affected
UPDATE: The death toll from catastrophic flooding in southern Thailand has tragically surged to at least 145 as of August 18, 2023. Officials report that receding waters are now exposing the widespread devastation across the region, impacting more than 3.6 million people in 12 southern provinces.
In a press conference held in Bangkok, government spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat confirmed that the flooding has claimed lives in eight provinces, with Songkhla Province bearing the brunt of the disaster—recording a staggering 110 deaths. The search and rescue operations have intensified as water levels continue to drop, allowing rescuers better access to previously submerged areas, particularly in Hat Yai, the largest city in the south.
Images and videos emerging from the affected areas depict the extent of the devastation: roads are severely damaged, power poles have fallen, and countless vehicles have been overturned or stacked haphazardly by the force of the floodwaters. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reports that while most affected areas are seeing waters recede, certain locations still face high water levels.
As the Meteorological Department notes a decrease in rainfall, it simultaneously warns of potential thunderstorms lingering in some regions, adding to the uncertainty for those impacted. Thousands remain stranded, with many facing the peril of impassable streets and submerged buildings.
The human toll from this disaster is profound, with families mourning lost loved ones and communities grappling with the aftermath. The situation remains fluid, and authorities urge residents in affected areas to stay vigilant as recovery efforts continue.
Looking ahead, officials emphasize that the recovery process will require extensive support and coordination, as residents begin to assess the damage and work to rebuild their lives after this devastating flooding event. Stay tuned for updates as this situation develops.
