URGENT UPDATE: Deloitte Australia has agreed to partially refund AU$440,000 (approximately $290,000) to the Australian government following revelations of serious inaccuracies in a report riddled with apparent AI-generated errors. This decision comes after a Sydney University researcher, Chris Rudge, exposed multiple instances of fabricated information, including a nonexistent quote from a federal court judgment.

The report, initially published in July, was intended to assess the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations’ use of automated penalties in Australia’s welfare system. However, it quickly came under scrutiny when Rudge identified up to 20 errors, including misattributed quotes and references to non-existent academic papers. “I instantaneously knew it was either hallucinated by AI or the world’s best kept secret,” Rudge stated, highlighting a fabricated book title attributed to a professor of public and constitutional law.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Department confirmed that Deloitte had acknowledged some inaccuracies and agreed to repay the final installment under its contract. The revised report, published on Friday, now includes a disclosure that a generative AI language system, Azure OpenAI, was utilized in its creation.

Despite these revisions, the department stressed that the core recommendations of the report remained unchanged. Rudge expressed serious concern over the implications of the report’s inaccuracies, particularly the misquotation of a judge, stating, “That’s about misstating the law to the Australian government.”

Senator Barbara Pocock, the Australian Greens party spokesperson on the public sector, has called for Deloitte to refund the entire AU$440,000. She criticized the firm for “misusing AI” and producing work that would be unacceptable even for a first-year university student.

Deloitte has not confirmed whether AI was responsible for the errors but mentioned that the “matter has been resolved directly with the client.” The department has stated that the refund amount will be made public once processed.

This incident raises critical questions about the reliability of AI-generated content, as the phenomenon known as “hallucination” can lead to the creation of false information, posing significant risks in sectors where accuracy is paramount.
