UPDATE: The City of Delta has just secured a critical $1.67 million grant aimed at enhancing its irrigation water conveyance system. This funding, announced earlier today, comes through the British Columbia government’s Agriculture Water Infrastructure Program and is set to significantly benefit the region’s agricultural sector.

This investment represents a substantial boost for Delta’s farming community, providing essential support during the critical late-summer months. Mayor George Harvie emphasized the importance of this funding, stating, “This investment strengthens our local food system and supports the farmers who play an important role in Delta’s economy and community.” His remarks highlight the urgency of ensuring a reliable water supply for local farmers.

The grant will finance two major projects critical for irrigation sustainability. The first involves constructing an additional intake to secure a consistent supply of freshwater from the Fraser River. This is especially crucial during late summer when the current system struggles to draw adequate water. The second project focuses on upgrading culverts along 72nd Street to enhance the irrigation system’s capacity, thereby allowing more efficient water delivery to farms across Delta.

The total cost for these vital upgrades is approximately $3.33 million, with the City of Delta committing $1.67 million to complete the projects. “These efforts will expand irrigation capacity, promote greater agricultural output, and reinforce the City of Delta’s dedication to sustainable agriculture,” the city stated in a press release.

Officials confirm that the Agriculture Water Infrastructure Program, which is managed by the Investment Agriculture Foundation, aims to bolster irrigation infrastructure and improve agricultural water supply. The initiative aligns with the city’s commitment to enhancing local agriculture and safeguarding food security. Minister of Agriculture and Food Lana Popham commented, “Delta farmers use some of our province’s best soil to provide British Columbians with fresh local produce, and they need a secure, reliable water supply to do it.”

This funding is particularly timely as Delta’s farmers prepare for the upcoming growing season. With the challenges posed by changing weather patterns, the improvements funded by this grant are crucial for ensuring food production resilience.

As Delta moves forward with these projects, residents and local farmers alike are optimistic about the long-term benefits. With increased irrigation capacity, the city aims to not only support current agricultural needs but also invest in the future sustainability of its local food production.

Stay tuned for more updates as Delta embarks on these vital irrigation improvements, securing a healthier and more robust agricultural future for its community.
