Edmonton Boosts Transit Safety with 30 New Peace Officers
UPDATE: Edmonton is taking urgent steps to enhance safety on its public transit system by adding 30 new peace officers by July. This move will increase the number of dedicated transit peace officers to a total of 126, ensuring a heightened presence on buses, the LRT, and transit centres across the city.
Officials confirmed that the City Council approved this initiative back in April 2023. As part of the rollout, 15 officers will be deployed this month, with the remaining officers expected to be on the streets by summer. According to David Jones, Edmonton’s chief bylaw enforcement officer, this initiative is a vital part of their commitment to a safe and reliable transit system.
The new officers will focus on proactive enforcement at stations with higher call volumes, particularly in downtown Edmonton. This area has been a focal point for safety concerns, as many residents have expressed mixed feelings about their transit experiences. One woman waiting for the train at a downtown LRT platform shared her anxiety, stating, “I feel it’s not very safe for a woman because you see everywhere there are people having drugs.”
In contrast, another passenger remarked, “I have never had a problem being on transit, so really don’t have bad things to say about it.” These varied perceptions highlight the urgent need for improved safety measures.
Jones also noted that the deployment of these officers aims to enhance public perception of transit safety. “When it comes to that public perception, lots of times that uniform provides that increased perception of safety,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of visible enforcement in building community confidence.
In addition to the peace officers, the city plans to establish a dedicated traffic safety team this year, which will include 22 frontline officers by the end of 2027. This team will focus on enforcing traffic violations, including speeding, further demonstrating the city’s commitment to public safety.
As these developments unfold, residents of Edmonton are urged to stay informed about the changes and enhancements to their transit system. The city’s proactive approach aims not only to improve safety but also to foster a sense of security among those who rely on public transportation.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to ensure that Edmonton’s transit system is not just efficient but also safe for all users. The city is committed to addressing the concerns of its residents and creating a transit environment where everyone feels secure.
Stay tuned for more updates as Edmonton continues to enhance its transit safety measures.
