Edmonton Gears Up for Remembrance Day with Multiple Events
UPDATE: Edmontonians are preparing to honor and remember their heroes this Remembrance Day, with a series of poignant ceremonies across the city on November 11, 2023. These events serve as a vital reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served in conflicts, both past and present.
The City Hall Remembrance Day service kicks off at 10 a.m. in the City Room, running until 11:30 a.m.. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early, as seating begins at 9:15 a.m.. Led by the commanding officer of the Loyal Edmonton Regiment, this solemn gathering will pay tribute to the bravery and achievements of Canadian veterans.
In a visually striking show of remembrance, the High Level Bridge, Walterdale Bridge, and other major landmarks—including Edmonton Tower and the Muttart Conservatory—will be illuminated in red on November 10. This light display aims to engage the community and encourage reflection ahead of the ceremonies.
At the Loyal Edmonton Regiment Military Museum, located at 10440 108 Ave, visitors can explore exhibits from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Remembrance Day. A traditional minute of silence will be observed at 11 a.m., allowing guests to reflect on the significance of the day. The museum will feature activities for all ages, ensuring a family-friendly environment.
The Beverly Memorial Cenotaph will host its own events, beginning with a church service at Maranatha Christian Reformed Church at 9:30 a.m.. Participants will march to the cenotaph for a service starting at 10:50 a.m., fostering community spirit and solidarity.
Meanwhile, the Calder Cenotaph will see its annual Remembrance Day ceremony from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.. A parade will lead participants from the North West Edmonton Seniors Society to the Calder Memorial Park, located at 12721 120 St. NW, where they will honor fallen soldiers with reverence.
In Strathcona County, a ceremony at Millennium Place will run from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.. Led by cadets from 238 RCSCC Campbeltown, the program will feature a parade, two minutes of silence, and wreath-laying, with the option to livestream the event via strathcona.ca/calendar.
The Village at Griesbach will also mark the day with a ceremony at the Patricia Park Memorial, hosted by the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI). Starting at 10:30 a.m., the program includes a veterans’ parade, laying of wreaths, and refreshments for attendees.
Finally, the Jasper Place Branch #255 of the Royal Canadian Legion will hold a service at the Ice Palace of West Edmonton Mall at 10 a.m., with a moment of silence scheduled for 11 a.m.. This event promises to draw significant community participation and support.
