Edmonton Welcomes Artist John Rombough, Celebrating His Roots
UPDATE: The Edmonton art scene is buzzing with excitement as local talent John Rombough has officially returned to the city, marking a significant moment for both the artist and the community. Just last month, Rombough, a former resident whose roots trace back to Lutselk’e in Canada’s Northwest Territories, made his presence felt with a heartfelt reunion and a commitment to share his unique artistic vision.
Rombough, who was adopted at the age of three, grew up in a supportive artistic environment in Prince Edward Island. His journey has been shaped by influences from iconic artists such as Norval Morrisseau, and he has developed a distinct style characterized by bold black lines and vibrant colors like turquoise blue and purple. His artwork often features themes of nature, including bears, wolves, and eagles, reflecting a deep connection to his Indigenous heritage.
The artist’s return to Edmonton is both timely and significant. With a population of over 1,300 Indigenous peoples, Edmonton serves as a cultural hub, drawing individuals from northern communities seeking opportunities in education, healthcare, and employment. Rombough’s choice to reside in the city allows him to tap into a broader market for his art, which has already gained traction at events like the Calgary Stampede and Edmonton’s K-Days.
Rombough shared his emotional journey of reconnecting with his biological father, who had been searching for him in Edmonton. Their reunion, described as “pretty emotional,” has deepened Rombough’s connection to his roots and inspired him to embrace his identity as an artist. “We were both happy and cried too,” he said, reflecting on their meeting.
As Rombough continues to establish his career, he has set up shop at Bearclaw Gallery in Edmonton, where his art is now available for purchase. His work not only resonates with local audiences but also serves as a bridge connecting Indigenous culture with contemporary art. His evolving style, which he describes as a culmination of experiences and influences, continues to attract a growing following.
With plans for more exhibitions on the horizon, including upcoming events in the local community, Rombough is poised to make a lasting impact on the Edmonton art landscape. The artist’s commitment to his craft and cultural heritage is a powerful reminder of the importance of community and identity.
What’s next? As Rombough settles into his new life in Edmonton, art enthusiasts and collectors alike are encouraged to engage with his work and support local Indigenous artists. Stay tuned for more updates on exhibitions and events featuring Rombough’s unique creations, as his journey continues to unfold in the heart of Edmonton.
