UPDATE: Edmonton’s first responders are set to kick off a highly anticipated charity soccer match today, July 15, 2023, at 1 p.m. The inaugural police versus firefighter game will take place at the Edmonton Scottish Soccer Centre, promising a day of fun, competition, and community support.

This exciting event aims to raise funds for several local charities, including the Wings of Providence, which supports victims of domestic abuse, and the Edmonton Firefighter’s Burn Treatment Society. Attendees can enjoy food and beverages from concession stands and barbecues, with all proceeds directly benefiting these important causes.

Const. Bruce McGregor expressed enthusiasm for the event, stating, “It gives us an opportunity to get together, play a soccer game on a nice day, invite the public to come and watch and raise some money for the community.” He mentioned that while his playing days may be behind him, he expects a spirited competition on the field.

Firefighter Jonathan Yamashita echoed McGregor’s sentiments, emphasizing the friendly rivalry, “We’re going to try our best. We’re going to play as clean as possible, but yeah, it’ll be physical.”

Admission to the family-friendly match is free, and there will be additional activities for children, including a half-time penalty shoot for kids aged seven and up. Attendees can also meet Sparky from Edmonton Fire Prevention and see rig appearances, adding to the community atmosphere.

With both teams eager to showcase their skills and camaraderie, this charity soccer game is not just about sports; it’s about community spirit and support for those in need. The event is expected to draw significant crowds, making it a perfect opportunity for families to enjoy a day out while contributing to meaningful causes.

Don’t miss this chance to support Edmonton’s heroes and make a difference in the community!
