Emergency Crews Battle West Dalhousie Wildfire Before Hurricane Erin

URGENT UPDATE: Emergency crews are racing against time to control the devastating Long Lake wildfire in West Dalhousie, N.S., before the expected winds from Hurricane Erin escalate on Saturday. The wildfire, which ignited on August 13, is currently raging across approximately 3,210 hectares of forested land, prompting significant evacuation efforts.

As of this morning, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reports that there are 52 members of its crew on the scene, supported by 42 local firefighters and 62 firefighters from Ontario. Six helicopters and six planes, along with over 30 heavy equipment operators, are on-site conducting critical firefighting operations. A new “precise measurement” of the fire’s extent is scheduled for today.

Conditions are currently “looking promising,” according to DNR officials, as crews continue to establish dozer guards and soak areas around the fire’s perimeter. However, the approaching winds from Hurricane Erin could pose new challenges, leading to potential wind shifts that could threaten nearby homes.

An evacuation order remains in place for 107 homes, affecting approximately 215 people. Fortunately, no homes have been reported damaged as the fire continues to be contained. Local authorities stress the importance of compliance with all emergency directives during this critical period.

In response to the escalating situation, the Municipality of the County of Annapolis has extended its local state of emergency, which was first declared on August 16. Warden Diane Le Blanc emphasized, “This wildfire continues to be a significant challenge for our communities, and our top priority remains the safety and wellbeing of our residents.”

Additionally, a special air quality statement is in effect for Annapolis and Queens counties, warning residents about the smoke impacting local air quality. Vulnerable populations, including the elderly, pregnant individuals, and those with pre-existing health conditions, are advised to limit outdoor activities and seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms.

Authorities urge all residents to stay informed and adhere strictly to safety protocols as this situation develops. The state of local emergency will remain in effect for another seven days unless renewed or terminated sooner.
