Erie Otters Surge Past Greyhounds for 5-2 Victory in OHL Clash
UPDATE: The Erie Otters dominated the Soo Greyhounds with a decisive 5-2 victory in an intense Ontario Hockey League matchup at GFL Memorial Gardens on October 25, 2023. This latest defeat highlights the Greyhounds’ ongoing struggles with consistency this season, leaving fans and analysts alike concerned about their performance.
The Greyhounds’ coach, John Dean, expressed frustration as the team faltered in the third period, stating, “It’s death by a million cuts when we play back just individual mistake after individual mistake.” The Otters capitalized on these errors, scoring two quick goals just minutes into the final period, which set the stage for their victory.
At just 1:10 into the third, Dylan Edwards found the net, pushing the Otters ahead 2-1. This was followed by another goal from Brett Hammond 56 seconds later, extending their lead to 3-1. Dean noted that the early third-period goals were “the story of our team right now,” as the Greyhounds struggled to maintain their defensive structure.
The Otters’ coach, Kris Mallette, praised his team’s performance, highlighting their ability to pressure the Greyhounds’ defense. “Our guys are definitely buying into the systems we’re trying to implement,” Mallette said, emphasizing the team’s improvement after a rocky start to the season.
The Greyhounds initially opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal from Noah Laus at 16:18 in the first period. However, they quickly allowed the Otters to equalize just half a minute later with Hammond’s goal. Both teams battled through a scoreless second period, but the Otters’ aggression in the third proved decisive.
While the Greyhounds managed to pull within two goals with Jordan Charron‘s deflection at 10:14, Wesley Royston sealed the Otters’ victory with an empty-net goal two minutes before the final buzzer.
In goal, Greyhounds’ Landon Miller faced 30 shots, stopping 26, while Otters’ Charlie Burns made 28 saves in his first start at home as an OHL goalie. Mallette remarked on the significance of Burns’ performance, noting, “The guys were ecstatic for him… to get him his first start here and his first win, that’s a big moment for him.”
Looking ahead, the Greyhounds will seek redemption when they host the Peterborough Petes on Friday night. Currently, the Greyhounds’ record stands at 8-6-0-0, while the Otters improve to 4-8-1-0.
In related news, the Greyhounds received positive updates as the NHL’s Nashville Predators announced that forward Brady Martin would be returning to the team after starting the season in professional hockey. Martin commented, “It was time to come back,” having played three games with the Predators.
Stay tuned for more updates as the OHL season progresses and teams continue to battle for positioning.
