BREAKING: A man has been arrested for allegedly stealing approximately $46,000 from the Esterhazy Minor Hockey Association. Authorities confirm that Cory Smith, a 26-year-old former treasurer of the organization, faces serious charges after a theft report was filed on July 30, 2025.

The Saskatchewan RCMP revealed that the theft involved around $43,000 taken via e-transfer and $3,000 in cash. As the investigation unfolded, local officers apprehended Smith in Esterhazy, where he has been charged with theft over $5,000.

In an official statement, the RCMP noted, “As a result of continued investigation, an adult male was arrested in Esterhazy.” Smith was subsequently released and is scheduled to appear in court on December 9, 2025.

The theft has significant implications for the hockey association, which relies on funding to maintain its operations. In a proactive move, Smith has reportedly returned $20,000 to the organization, allowing them to cover outstanding fees and continue their programs.

This incident raises urgent concerns about financial oversight within community sports organizations. Parents and members of the Esterhazy community are understandably shaken, as local youth sports depend on trust and transparency.

As the court date approaches, community members are eager to see how this case unfolds. The Esterhazy Minor Hockey Association is expected to hold discussions regarding enhanced financial controls to prevent similar incidents in the future.
