F1 Silly Season Sparks Urgent Moves at Red Bull, Mercedes, Cadillac

UPDATE: The highly anticipated Formula 1 “silly season” is officially underway as teams brace for significant changes amid a critical four-week pause in racing. With a mandatory 14-day shutdown starting next week, speculation is rampant regarding driver contracts and team compositions for the 2026 season.

Max Verstappen, the four-time champion, has confirmed he will remain with Red Bull, alleviating immediate concerns about his future. This announcement is expected to accelerate contract negotiations within Mercedes, where team principal Toto Wolff is evaluating extensions for key drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, both of whom are not confirmed beyond 2025. Russell, a four-time GP winner, stated, “Mercedes manage me as well, so it’s not really a deadline in my hands.”

As Red Bull’s lineup remains uncertain, the team faces pressure to fill three seats: one at Red Bull and two at Racing Bulls. Following the firing of longtime principal Christian Horner, the decision-making process has become murky. Last season, the team dropped underperforming driver Sergio Perez, but replacements have struggled. Liam Lawson lasted only two races, and Yuki Tsunoda has scored points in just three of twelve race weekends.

The situation is compounded as Red Bull’s engine partnership with Honda concludes this year, raising questions about Tsunoda’s future. However, French rookie Isack Hadjar is making headlines, having outperformed both Tsunoda and Lawson this season, positioning him as a frontrunner for the coveted Red Bull seat.

Meanwhile, the FIA has granted Arvid Lindblad, a Red Bull-backed Formula 2 driver, a super license before his 18th birthday, showcasing the organization’s commitment to nurturing young talent.

In addition to Red Bull’s turmoil, the new General Motors-backed team, Cadillac, is making waves. Valtteri Bottas, known for his social media presence, is rumored to be a leading candidate to join Cadillac in 2026. The former F1 race winner, alongside Sergio Perez, both face a critical juncture in their careers after lackluster seasons. Other options for Cadillac include Ferrari reserve Zhou Guanyu, who could attract significant sponsorship from China, and Mick Schumacher, the son of legendary champion Michael Schumacher.

The situation at Alpine is equally unstable, with the team recently benching Esteban Ocon for Jack Doohan, only to replace Doohan with Franco Colapinto shortly after. As neither driver has scored any points, uncertainty looms over who will partner with Pierre Gasly next season. One potential candidate is Alpine reserve Paul Aron, who could become the first Estonian in F1, having had limited practice runs with Sauber.
