Family Demands Answers After Tragic Crash Claims Mother’s Life

UPDATE: A week after the tragic death of Omotayo Samuel-Pepple, her family is urgently seeking answers about the circumstances surrounding her fatal crash on September 16, 2023. Samuel-Pepple, a dedicated mother of three, was struck while waiting at a bus stop on Abinojii Mikanah near St. Mary’s Road.
The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. when an eastbound vehicle veered off the road, hitting her before crashing into a guardrail and rolling onto its roof. Her sister, Mary Oloyede, expressed the family’s frustration, stating, “It’s been frustrating, shocking and sudden. We really want to know what happened.”
Samuel-Pepple was taken to the hospital where she initially was conscious but later succumbed to her injuries two days later. Police confirmed that the driver remained at the scene and was unharmed, but no charges have yet been filed. Investigators are actively seeking witnesses and dash-cam footage to piece together the events leading up to the crash.
Oloyede, who traveled from Toronto to Winnipeg, emphasized the family’s desperate need for clarity. “We have a lot of questions. Was it a case of impaired driving? We have none of the details,” she pleaded.
The community is mourning the loss of a woman who had only recently moved to Winnipeg in January as an international student, studying human resource management at the University of Manitoba. Samuel-Pepple had begun her career at a local YMCA and was described as a nurturing figure who had already made significant connections with children and staff. Cordella Friesen, president of YMCA-YWCA Winnipeg, stated, “Our Y community is shocked and deeply saddened by this tragedy.”
Samuel-Pepple leaves behind her husband and three children, aged 21, 17, and 14, who reside in Nigeria. Oloyede shared that her sister was a beloved family member, known for her peaceful demeanor and kindness. “Everyone who met her would tell you she was a good person,” she said.
The local Nigerian community has rallied to support the family during this devastating time. Rhema Sanctuary, a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, is collecting donations to assist with funeral expenses and has already raised over $2,300. Pastor Yettie Adewumi praised Samuel-Pepple’s character, calling her “one of the most admirable people” in their community.
In light of the tragedy, Coun. Janice Lukes stated that the city will review the location of the crash to determine if any safety improvements are needed. The bus stop where the incident occurred lacks adequate safety measures, consisting only of a bench close to a high-speed road.
The Winnipeg Police Service is continuing its investigation into the crash. A spokesperson reiterated their commitment to finding answers for the grieving family, stating, “We understand this is a difficult time, especially for a family that is not in the city.”
As the community and family await further details, they hope for transparency and justice in the wake of this heartbreaking loss. The church is also working to expedite visas for Samuel-Pepple’s family members to attend a memorial service, which is still being planned.
This developing story highlights the urgent need for answers as the family navigates their grief and seeks justice for a beloved member lost too soon.
