Family Mourns the Passing of Andrew Szigli at 84 Years Old
BREAKING NEWS: Andrew Thomas Szigli, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, peacefully passed away on December 21, 2023, at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital, surrounded by family. He was 84 years old and leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.
Born on August 3, 1939, to Hungarian immigrant parents Steve and Julia Szigli in Lestock, Saskatchewan, Andrew was the youngest of 12 siblings. His family is heartbroken, noting that with his passing, “the train has now fully left the station,” reflecting his lifelong spirit and humor.
Andrew’s early years were spent in Lestock, where he helped his brothers on their family farm. At 18 years old, he moved to Regina, living with his sister Emma and beginning a career in trucking. Andrew’s passion for music flourished during this time as he played in a band, where he met his first love, Josie Vogt, in December 1961. They married on June 23, 1962, and welcomed their daughter, Leahann, two years later.
In 1980, the family relocated to Cranbrook, BC, where they built a community of lifelong friends. In 1993, Andrew founded his own trucking business, Szigli Transport Ltd., which he ran until 2003. Even in retirement, he continued to drive until he was 80 years old, fulfilling a lifelong dream of exploring North America.
Andrew’s greatest joy came from his family, especially his granddaughter Mariah, born in 1999. He adored attending her dance recitals and volleyball tournaments and cherished weekends spent at their family retreat, Eagles Nest in Moyie. Tragically, Josie passed away in 2003, leaving Andrew heartbroken. He later found love again with Fydelia Braun, marrying in September 2015, and together they created many happy memories traveling and enjoying life at the lake.
Throughout his life, Andrew was renowned for his culinary skills, particularly his famous Hungarian cabbage rolls and homegrown tomatoes. He often expressed gratitude for the love and care received from family and friends, especially in his final days.
His family is thankful for the support from Dr. Yue and the staff at the F.W. Green Clinic, along with the dedicated doctors and nurses at EKRH. In a heartfelt message, they encourage those wishing to honor Andrew to consider a donation to the BC Lung Foundation.
A celebration of Andrew’s life is planned for early summer, a fitting tribute to a man who loved warm, sunny days and the company of his closest family and friends. His legacy of love, laughter, and unforgettable memories will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
