Family-Run Gerry’s Fast Foods Thrives Amidst Community Love
BREAKING: A beloved family-run restaurant in Toronto, Gerry’s Fast Foods, is capturing headlines as it celebrates nearly 50 years of serving the community with authentic Jamaican cuisine. The iconic eatery, located on St. Clair West, has become a culinary landmark, drawing customers from near and far who are eager to taste its famous chickpea roti and rum cake.
On a recent flight home, passenger Jeff Cupchik faced severe turbulence but only had one thought: “I just want to go to Gerry’s.” For generations, the Wong family has created culinary magic, and even after the passing of founder Gerry Wong in 2020, his legacy lives on through his children, Donovan and Andrea, who continue to run the restaurant with the same passion.
The restaurant’s menu features Jamaican classics like jerk chicken and curry goat that have made it a staple for both locals and those willing to travel for a taste. Donovan recounts stories of customers, including a Blue Jays manager who famously bought chicken rotis the day the team clinched the World Series in 1993. One customer even risked it all, dangling money over a construction pit just to get his fix during a difficult period for the neighborhood.
Gerry’s Fast Foods isn’t just about food; it’s a community hub. Regulars have shared their support, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, when customers called to check on the Wongs and even offered loans to help the business survive. “It was good to know that we were really that well-liked in the community,” Donovan said.
Despite the challenges of running a small business, including the soaring price of oxtail, the Wongs remain committed to serving their loyal clientele. Donovan’s daily routine involves sourcing fresh ingredients from across the city, ensuring quality and affordability. As he puts it, “A lot of places don’t even carry it anymore; at $10 a pound, it can cost more than prime rib!”
The community’s love for Gerry’s Fast Foods is palpable. Many customers share heartwarming stories of how they have returned to the restaurant with their own children, continuing a family tradition. Donovan recalls a mother who insisted on getting a Gerry’s cake for her daughter’s birthday, saying, “if we didn’t get a Gerry’s cake, she doesn’t want to have a party.”
As the restaurant adapts to changing times, the Wong family continues to innovate while maintaining the traditions that have made Gerry’s a cherished institution. They now offer a selection of gourmet rum cakes year-round, with the holiday season often turning into a “madhouse” of baking as they fulfill hundreds of orders for the community.
Donovan emphasizes the importance of kindness in their business model. He regularly accommodates customers who may be short on cash, allowing them to pay later. The goodwill has created a loyal customer base that spans generations, with new families discovering the magic of Gerry’s every day.
As Toronto’s culinary scene evolves, Gerry’s Fast Foods stands firm, a testament to the enduring power of community, family, and good food. The Wongs continue to welcome all who enter with warmth and generosity, ensuring that for many, Gerry’s remains a true home away from home.
For those craving a taste of Jamaica in Toronto, there’s no better time to visit Gerry’s Fast Foods. This beloved restaurant is not just a place to eat; it’s a vital part of the community fabric, thriving on the support and love of its patrons.
