Fan Expo Canada Kicks Off 30th Anniversary with Rare Michael J. Fox Appearance

UPDATE: Fan Expo Canada is set to launch its highly anticipated 30th anniversary celebration this Thursday, August 24, 2025. This year, the event promises an unforgettable experience, featuring a rare appearance by the beloved Michael J. Fox, who will engage fans in a panel discussion alongside co-star Christopher Lloyd.
The convention, held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, is expected to attract over 130,000 attendees from across the globe, making it the largest pop culture event in Canada. With a diverse lineup of celebrities, including William Shatner, Ewan McGregor, and John Boyega, the excitement is palpable as fans prepare to immerse themselves in the world of comics, gaming, anime, and cosplay.
Michael J. Fox, diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991, is making this rare public appearance as part of the 40th anniversary celebration of the iconic movie trilogy, Back To The Future. “He’s only doing a few appearances this year — he’s an icon obviously — so everywhere that he is appearing is a special nod to that area he wanted to include,” said Andrew Moyes, vice-president of Fan Expo HQ.
Joining Fox at the event are other notable cast members from Back To The Future, including Mary Steenburgen and Bob Gale, who will all contribute to the nostalgia surrounding the franchise.
On Saturday, William Shatner, 94, will share stories from his illustrious seven-decade career in entertainment, captivating fans with his legendary experiences in the industry.
The growth of Fan Expo Canada is remarkable; it began as the Canadian National Comic Book Expo in 1995 with just 1,500 attendees and has since evolved into a must-visit event for pop culture enthusiasts. “It’s grown exponentially,” Moyes noted, emphasizing the community’s passion that drives the event’s success.
Not only will the expo feature a reunion of Twilight stars like Ashley Greene and Kellan Lutz, but wrestling legends Sting and Trish Stratus will also be present, sharing their journeys with fans.
The event doesn’t just fill the convention center; it energizes the streets of Toronto. “You see cosplayers bringing incredible energy to Toronto’s streets and attendees discovering the city’s restaurants, shops, attractions, and neighborhoods,” stated Kelly Jackson, vice-president of destination development at Destination Toronto.
With just hours to go, fans are urged to lock in their tickets and prepare for a weekend filled with excitement, nostalgia, and unforgettable memories. Don’t miss the chance to meet your favorite stars, as this iconic celebration of fandom is set to be one for the books.
Stay tuned for more updates as Fan Expo Canada kicks off this Thursday and runs through Sunday, August 27, 2025.
