Father Demands Answers After Infant’s Tragic Death in Winnipeg
URGENT UPDATE: A devastating tragedy has unfolded at the Winnipeg Children’s Hospital following the death of a six-month-old boy, prompting a critical incident review. Father Lu Teng is left questioning the care his son, Luca Teng, received during a series of medical procedures. “We’ll never get through this,” Teng expressed, grappling with the loss of his child.
Luca was born in July 2023 with a rare condition where his esophagus fails to connect to his stomach, requiring multiple procedures to correct the issue. After his eighth medical procedure in mid-January 2024, Teng noticed alarming symptoms and rushed his son to the emergency room. “He had some problems with drinking, coughing, choking,” Teng recounted, revealing a heartbreaking situation.
During their visit to the hospital, doctors discovered a hole in Luca’s esophagus, a potential complication from the recent procedure. Despite monitoring his vital signs, Teng claims that Luca’s condition deteriorated, and he alerted hospital staff throughout the night. Tragically, after a harrowing ten hours, Luca was taken into emergency surgery but did not survive.
Teng firmly believes that had his son received timely care, Luca might still be alive today. “I fully trusted them,” he lamented, highlighting the emotional toll of his family’s loss.
In response to the incident, Manitoba Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara stated that protocols were followed appropriately for cases like Luca’s. However, a critical incident review has been ordered to examine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. “We need to understand if there was an opportunity here that the health team can learn from moving forward,” Asagwara emphasized.
Dr. Patricia Bird, Shared Health’s lead for child health, reassured that on the day Luca was admitted, staffing was at full capacity and triaging protocols were executed correctly. “When the infant presented to the emergency department, the triaging protocols were appropriately followed,” Dr. Bird confirmed.
A preliminary report from the critical incident review is expected within 30 days, with a comprehensive analysis due in 90 days. Teng has been informed to anticipate the report in May or June, but the pain of his loss remains fresh and overwhelming.
As this story develops, the community watches closely for answers about the circumstances leading to Luca’s tragic death. The outpouring of support for the Teng family continues, as many share in the grief of losing such a young life.
Stay tuned for updates as authorities continue their investigation into this heartbreaking incident.
