Fiji Crushes Canada 63-10 in Pacific Nations Cup Semifinal
BREAKING: Fiji has dominated Canada in a stunning 63-10 victory during the semifinals of the Pacific Nations Cup men’s rugby tournament, held in Commerce City on September 14, 2025. With nine tries scored, the ninth-ranked Pacific Islanders overwhelmed the 24th-ranked Canadian team, marking a historic low for Canada in this tournament.
Fiji took control early, leading 43-3 at halftime after a breathtaking six-try first half. The Canadian squad, led by captain Mason Flesch, struggled to respond to Fiji’s athleticism and physical play. Flesch expressed disappointment after the match, stating, “A very difficult score line to take in. We were really looking to back up our performance against Japan, but Fiji just outworked us in the first half.”
Canada managed to score only once, with Brock Gallagher crossing the line, while Peter Nelson added a conversion and a penalty. Following Nelson’s penalty at the 7th minute, Fiji surged with an impressive 51 unanswered points.
Coach Mick Byrne praised his team’s vigor, noting, “We started with some real intent and put some scores on the board.” Fiji’s scoring was spearheaded by Kalaveti Ravouvou, who scored three tries, with Taniela Rakuro adding two. The team also saw contributions from Mesake Vocevoce, Etonia Waqa, Eroni Mawi, and Joji Nasova.
The defeat marks Canada’s worst performance since a 70-14 loss to England in July 2021. This match was also significant as it was the first for Canada since they secured World Cup qualification last week due to Japan’s victory over the U.S. The Canadian men’s team now prepares for a third-place playoff against Tonga, a rematch of last year’s fifth-place match.
Earlier in the day, Japan triumphed over Tonga with a score of 62-24, setting up a rematch with Fiji for the championship next Saturday at America First Field in Sandy, Utah. Fiji emerged victorious in last year’s final, defeating Japan 41-17.
As the Pacific Nations Cup continues, Fiji remains a dominant force, having won six of the tournament’s 16 iterations. Their performance has raised expectations for the upcoming championship match, while Canada looks to regroup and improve against Tonga.
The Pacific Nations Cup not only determines tournament standing but also plays a crucial role in World Cup qualifications. The U.S. Eagles secured their spot for the 2027 Men’s Rugby World Cup by defeating Samoa 29-13 earlier in the day, making them the 22nd team to qualify for the prestigious tournament.
With the stakes high and the competition fierce, fans are eagerly awaiting the finals as Fiji and Japan prepare to battle once again.
