Five Boys Basketball Stars to Watch as Season Kicks Off Today
UPDATE: The prep boys basketball season officially kicks off today across the Daily Journal area, spotlighting five standout players poised to make a significant impact this year. As anticipation builds, fans and scouts alike are eager to see how these athletes will shape the season.
Leading the charge is Lincoln Williams from Kankakee. The senior guard is not just the reigning Daily Journal Co-Player of the Year but also holds the title of No. 1 recruit in the state according to Rivals and 247 Sports. Williams averaged an impressive 19 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocks per game last year. He is back with three other returning starters and is set to lead Kankakee, fresh off a 25-6 season that saw them capture an IHSA Class 3A Regional title.
At Bishop McNamara, Callaghan O’Connor is another name to watch. The four-year starting center has also committed to play baseball at Notre Dame, but his basketball prowess has shone brightly. Last season, he averaged 11 points, 6 rebounds, and contributed significantly to his team’s push for a Class 2A Sectional title.
Meanwhile, Kobe Lawrence from Bradley-Bourbonnais is ready to step into a more prominent role this season. Under the direction of new head coach Eric Long, Lawrence is expected to become a key player after previously averaging 4 points per game. Long believes he has the potential to emerge as one of Chicagoland’s top shooters this winter.
Over at Cissna Park, Seth Walder stands out as part of one of the most dynamic backcourts in Class 1A. Last season, he averaged 17.2 points, along with solid contributions in assists and steals. His partnership with teammate Dierks Neukomm, who averaged 21.7 points per game, is crucial as they aim to lead the team to its first winning season since 2019-20.
Lastly, Grant Pomaranski from St. Anne is another player to keep an eye on. The talented senior is looking to build on his success from last season, where he averaged 10 points, 4.7 rebounds, and secured honorable mention recognition. With a strong supporting cast, the Cardinals are aiming to replicate their previous success in the River Valley Conference.
As the season unfolds, these players are set to become household names in high school basketball. Fans are encouraged to tune in and follow their journeys as they strive for individual and team excellence. Be sure to stay updated as we track their performances and the impact they have on their respective teams this season.
