Flames Suffer Devastating 8-1 Loss to Canucks in Pre-Season Showdown
New reports confirm a shocking performance from the Calgary Flames as they were crushed 8-1 by the Vancouver Canucks in a disastrous pre-season game on September 27, 2023. The Flames now face critical concerns just days before the regular season begins, with shaky goaltending and potential injuries to key forwards raising alarms among fans and analysts alike.
Flames alternate captain MacKenzie Weegar expressed urgency following the game, stating, “I think that’s the only good takeaway is that it happened in pre-season and hopefully we can wake up from that.” The Flames will face the Winnipeg Jets in their final exhibition match this Friday, and Weegar emphasized the need to treat it like a home opener.
This latest loss raises serious questions about the Flames’ backup goalie situation. Both candidates, Ivan Prosvetov and Devin Cooley, struggled significantly. Prosvetov was pulled after allowing five goals on just 19 shots, while Cooley fared no better, stopping only four of seven attempts against him. Flames coach Ryan Huska noted the difficulties both goalies faced, attributing some of the blame to the team’s lackluster defensive play.
The Flames are now in a precarious position as both Prosvetov and Cooley require waivers to be sent to the minors, making this the final audition for the backup role. With Dustin Wolf expected to be the main starter, the choice of who will back him up is crucial and will likely be determined shortly.
In the first period alone, Prosvetov was bombarded, allowing a breakaway goal from Brock Boeser, a power-play one-timer from Elias Pettersson, and even a deflected goal off a teammate. Cooley’s performance was likewise marred by defensive lapses, including a weak goal from Aatu Raty and a three-on-one goal by Quinn Hughes.
With the season opener looming, the Flames must address these glaring issues or risk entering the regular season with a shaky foundation. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as the team prepares for their final pre-season test and seeks to rebound from this humiliating defeat.
Stay tuned for updates as the Flames gear up for their showdown against the Jets. The stakes are high, and the pressure is on to turn this ship around before the games count in the standings.
