Gas Station Canopy Collapses Under Snow in Cary, No Injuries Reported
BREAKING: A gas station canopy collapsed in Cary, Illinois, earlier today, heavily impacted by snow accumulation after previous storm damage. The incident occurred at the Marathon gas station located at 8 E. Main St.. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, according to Village Administrator Erik Morimoto.
As snow fell overnight, the weakened structure succumbed under the weight, prompting immediate safety protocols. The fuel dispensing system was swiftly shut off, and it remains offline until demolition is completed and the owner coordinates with insurance, Morimoto confirmed in an email to the Northwest Herald. Despite the canopy collapse, the convenience store at the gas station is still operational.
The canopy’s instability traces back to a severe thunderstorm that hit McHenry County in August. This storm, characterized by hail and winds exceeding 70 mph, wreaked havoc, damaging buildings, downing trees, and causing extensive power outages. In response to the storm’s aftermath, Cary Mayor Mark Kownick declared a state of emergency, ensuring public safety amidst the chaos.
Following the storm, a structural engineer assessed the gas station and deemed the structure stable; however, the village mandated safety measures, including cordoning off the area until proper repairs or a replacement could be arranged. The safety perimeter was still active when the canopy collapsed today, highlighting ongoing concerns about the integrity of structures affected by the storm.
The situation remains fluid as officials assess damage and begin cleanup efforts. Residents are urged to stay clear of the area as safety measures are reinforced.
Authorities will provide updates as they coordinate demolition and recovery efforts. Stay tuned for more developments on this breaking story.
