Genoa-Kingston Claims Victory with 27 Steals Against Indian Creek
UPDATE: Genoa-Kingston delivered a stunning performance, securing a 49-39 victory over Indian Creek on December 4, 2023, powered by an impressive 27 steals. This critical win marks a significant moment for the Cogs, who overcame a 48-35 rebounding deficit, showcasing their tenacity on the court.
Presley Meyer emerged as the standout player, scoring 27 points, alongside six rebounds and six steals. “We know we don’t have much size, but we’ve been pretty scrappy,” Meyer stated post-game, highlighting the team’s determination despite their challenges.
Indian Creek initially took control, leading 9-5 early in the game with a three-pointer from Bethany Odle. However, the Cogs quickly retaliated, scoring 17 of the next 19 points, ignited by a three-pointer from Meyer. The Cogs extended their lead to a commanding 39-23 by the end of the third quarter, demonstrating their defensive prowess.
As the game progressed, Indian Creek mounted a comeback, reducing the deficit to just 41-35 after a layup by Ally Keilman, who finished with 10 points and five steals. Coach Paul Muchmore praised his team’s resilience, stating, “We just started making some shots… I’m really impressed.”
Despite the late pressure, the Cogs rallied back, scoring an 8-0 run to secure their victory. The game highlighted the Cogs’ adaptability and scrappy play style, essential for overcoming their size disadvantage.
Ari Rich contributed significantly, scoring 16 points and securing eight steals before fouling out in the fourth quarter. “Ari is a do-it-all kid for us,” said Genoa-Kingston coach Doug Brewington, acknowledging the challenges faced when she exited the game.
Genoa-Kingston’s defensive strategy proved effective as Indian Creek turned the ball over 33 times. The young Timberwolves, led by freshman point guard Elsie Betz, continue to learn and grow, with Muchmore emphasizing their need for experience and development.
Looking ahead, Genoa-Kingston (4-4) aims to build on this momentum, while Indian Creek (2-3) will seek to address their turnover issues in upcoming games. Fans and players alike are eager to see how both teams adapt and evolve in this competitive season.
