Genoa-Kingston Cogs Gear Up for Football Season Kickoff
UPDATE: The Genoa-Kingston Cogs are primed for an exciting football season as they prepare to kick off on August 29, 2025, at home against Oregon. Coach Cam Davekos emphasizes his team’s high-energy approach, led by the intense and dynamic player Owen Zaccard, who returns as both linebacker and running back.
Zaccard, known for his relentless drive, is set to play a crucial role in the Cogs’ quest for a second consecutive playoff berth. “He just goes 100 miles per hour and doesn’t quit,” Davekos stated, highlighting Zaccard’s determination to lead both on offense and defense.
The Cogs, who finished with a record of 5-5 last season, have consistently qualified for the playoffs, making it to eight of the last nine postseasons since 2013. This year, the team aims to build on that success with significant changes to their offensive strategy.
With Zaccard and fellow lineman Mason McPeek as the only returning starters on offense, the Cogs are implementing more triple-option concepts. This multifaceted approach allows the quarterback to decide whether to hand off, run, or pass the ball, creating a dynamic offensive identity.
The battle for the starting quarterback position between Cody Cravatta and Jaiden Lee is heating up, with both players vying for the crucial role. “I’m just working hard,” Cravatta said. “I’m trying to do better than him, obviously, but I’m trying to make sure I make myself and my teammates better at the same time.”
Coach Davekos noted that regardless of who wins, the decision will significantly impact the Cogs’ offensive strategy. “We’re going to evaluate every single day,” he stated, indicating that Friday’s scrimmage will be pivotal in determining the Week 1 starters.
Zaccard’s intensity will help set the tone for the Cogs’ offense, which will also feature players like Blake Ides and Kash Sunderlage, who will see carries from the slot in the team’s wing-T formation. With a focus on efficiency, Davekos acknowledged the need to monitor Zaccard’s touches throughout the season to maintain his health.
As the countdown to the season opener begins, the Cogs are gearing up to engage their fans and make a strong statement on the field. Expect an electrifying start to the season as the Genoa-Kingston Cogs look to reclaim their spot in the playoffs with a fierce and committed team effort.
