Giving Tuesday 2023: Join the Global Generosity Movement NOW
UPDATE: November 28, 2023, marks the return of Giving Tuesday, a global movement urging individuals to embrace kindness and compassion through charitable donations. As the festive shopping season kicks off with Black Friday and Cyber Monday, charities worldwide are calling for a pause on commercialism to focus on giving back.
Giving Tuesday was first launched in 2012 in New York City, where its founders aimed to create a day dedicated to encouraging goodwill. The movement quickly gained momentum, expanding to Canada in 2013 and now spans six continents. According to Erin Filey-Wronecki, Chief Development and Partnerships Officer at Food Banks Canada, this initiative serves as a vital reaction to the consumer frenzy of the holiday season.
“It is a great chance for people who have the capacity to do something to give back,” Filey-Wronecki stated. With many organizations participating, donors can see their contributions go further, as numerous charities will match donations made today, effectively doubling their impact.
Last year, $16.2 million was raised by participating charities on Giving Tuesday. Filey-Wronecki revealed that for Food Banks Canada, this day accounts for a significant 5 percent of their annual revenue, with half of their yearly individual donations coming in during the last six weeks of the year. “Your gift, along with the gifts of all your neighbours, really does change people’s lives,” she emphasized.
Participating organizations, including Parkinson Canada, the Canadian Cancer Society, and UNICEF Canada, are also gearing up to match individual contributions today, creating an urgent opportunity for donors to maximize their generosity.
As you consider your holiday spending, remember that Giving Tuesday is about more than just financial contributions. It’s a chance to engage with your community, volunteer your time, and support local charities that make a difference.
In this spirit of generosity, look for ways to contribute and spread the word. The impact of your donation can be felt far beyond today, helping those in need throughout the year.
With the clock ticking, join the movement and make your donation count this Giving Tuesday. The need is urgent, and your action can spark a wave of kindness that resonates around the world.
