Golden Hawks Kick Off 2024 Season with High Hopes and Scrimmage
BREAKING: The Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks football team hosted a highly anticipated scrimmage against the York Lions today, marking a thrilling return to the field as they gear up for their 2024 season opener on August 23 against the Gryphons at the University of Guelph.
The excitement is palpable as fans and players alike reflect on the Golden Hawks’ remarkable previous season, where they finished undefeated through 11 games and narrowly missed winning the national U Sports championship. “It’s August again, so football season is right around the corner, and I just can’t wait,” said Jesulayomi Ojutalayo, a fourth-year wide receiver, capturing the team’s enthusiasm.
Head coach Michael Faulds emphasized the importance of staying focused despite last year’s success. “We’ve got a very mature group that knows we’re going to have to earn everything,” he noted, highlighting the challenges ahead. With a target on their backs after last year’s achievements, the Golden Hawks are determined to carve out their new identity this season.
A key concern for the team is the quarterback position, following the departure of star player Taylor Elgersma, who has signed with the NFL’s Green Bay Packers. “We’ve got five quarterbacks in-house, all working really hard,” Faulds explained. The competition is fierce, but he believes the depth of the roster will alleviate pressure on whoever steps up as the starter.
Ojutalayo, who is also preparing for his professional draft year, expressed how the team’s recent success has fostered a positive cultural shift. “The guys have all bought into the process, which Coach Faulds has laid out for us,” he said, showcasing a strong sense of team unity and commitment.
The Golden Hawks are poised to solidify their starting lineup in the coming days. As they prepare for the regular season, the atmosphere around Laurier is charged with optimism and determination. “This is a destination where you can win a lot of football games,” Faulds added, underlining the program’s growing reputation.
With the season kickoff just a week away, the Golden Hawks are ready to take on new challenges and continue building on their impressive legacy. Stay tuned for updates as the excitement unfolds!
