Government Street Upgrade in Burns Lake Completed: New Pathways Open

UPDATE: The long-awaited upgrade of Government Street in Burns Lake has officially been completed, providing new active transportation pathways for residents. This project, which wrapped up on August 14, 2023, aimed to enhance cycling and walking routes along the corridor, significantly impacting local mobility.
The summer-long construction saw the realignment of critical intersections at Gilgan Road and 3rd Avenue, improving safety and accessibility for all road users. Despite causing disruptions for local businesses and residents, many expressed gratitude for the enhancements.
“We appreciate your patience through the bumpy detours,” stated the Village of Burns Lake in a Facebook post announcing the project’s completion. The post also recognized the hard work of local contractors, including Josh Carpenter and Granite Excavating, for their efforts in making the upgrades a success.
Local business owners faced challenges during construction, particularly those serving seniors. Dieca Cooke from The Curly Temple Hair Salon highlighted the difficulties clients faced due to uneven pathways and limited parking. “Our clients are still finding us no problem, but there is zero parking near the building for them,” she said. “It is causing clients to be a bit late for appointments, especially seniors who struggle with the gravel and uneven surfaces.”
This upgrade is part of a broader initiative by the Village to promote active transportation, which includes plans for safer pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure throughout Burns Lake. A village spokesperson emphasized, “This project is a strategic component of the Village’s broader commitment to active transportation infrastructure, aiming to better accommodate pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.”
The completion of these upgrades marks a significant step towards a more connected and healthier community. Officials expect that the new design will enhance traffic flow and visibility while supporting sustainable transportation options.
As Burns Lake residents celebrate the completion, the Village is urging everyone to explore the new pathways and enjoy the benefits of improved mobility. Local leaders are optimistic that these changes will foster a more vibrant community and encourage more people to walk and bike.
Looking ahead, the community will continue to monitor the impacts of these changes, with future projects planned to further enhance the area’s transportation network. The Village of Burns Lake invites residents to share their experiences and feedback on the new upgrades, highlighting the importance of community involvement in shaping a better environment for all.
