Grande Prairie Fire Department Receives $51,997 Safety Boost
URGENT UPDATE: The Grande Prairie Fire Department (GPFD) just received a vital financial boost of $51,997 from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada. This funding was officially presented on September 16, 2023, and will enable the department to acquire essential safety equipment, including nine sets of bunker gear crucial for firefighter protection.
In a ceremony held outside the local Firehouse Subs location, GPFD officials highlighted the importance of this donation. The new bunker gear, which includes flame-resistant coats and pants, is designed to protect firefighters from extreme heat, flames, and hazardous materials encountered during emergencies. This gear significantly reduces the risks of burns and toxic exposure, ensuring that firefighters can perform their duties with greater safety and efficiency.
GPFD Fire Chief Mark VanWerkhoven expressed profound gratitude for this significant contribution, stating, “The Grande Prairie Fire Department is thankful for this significant donation by the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada towards safety gear for our firefighters. This funding will go a long way in supporting our department, in turn helping us support the community.”
The department responds to nearly 3,000 calls annually, making the acquisition of reliable safety gear even more critical. During a recent Public and Protective Services meeting, VanWerkhoven reported that the call volume from 2023 to 2024 is approaching this significant number, underscoring the growing demands placed on local first responders.
Mayor Jackie Clayton also praised the contribution, saying, “This grant from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada reflects the generous and innovative spirit of Grande Prairie and how we are stronger together. The City is thankful for this significant contribution towards community safety.”
The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation has a longstanding mission since its inception in 2005 to provide lifesaving equipment and training for first responders. With over $5 million awarded throughout Canada, the foundation continues to enhance the lifesaving capabilities of local heroes and their communities.
As GPFD gears up to implement this new equipment, the focus remains firmly on ensuring community safety. The need for reliable bunker gear is underscored by the National Fire Protection Association standards, which mandate that such equipment be replaced every 10 years to ensure optimal performance.
Stay tuned for updates on how this generous donation will impact the safety and effectiveness of the Grande Prairie Fire Department as they continue to serve and protect the community. This development marks a significant step forward in enhancing the safety measures for local firefighters.
